Variable frequency drives (VFD) — precise speed control for three-phase fans and maximum energy saving
Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs / frequency inverters) are the most efficient speed control method for three-phase fan motors. Unlike analogue controllers for single-phase AC motors that reduce applied voltage (with significant energy losses), a VFD modifies the frequency of the alternating current supplied to the motor — precisely controlling rotation speed without mechanical or thermal losses.
Due to the cubic power law of ventilation, reducing to 80% of nominal speed reduces energy consumption to 51% of nominal. At 70% speed: 34% consumption. At 50% speed: 12.5% consumption. Key VFD functions for ventilation: gradual soft start (eliminates mechanical shock), controlled stop, 0-10V signal input for demand-controlled ventilation, integrated motor protection (replaces separate protection relay), display and parameterisation (min/max speed, acceleration/deceleration ramps). Three-phase motors cannot be controlled with single-phase analogue controllers — VFD is the only technically correct option.
