The history of Casals goes back to the end of the 19th century, in 1881, when founder Francesc Casals Fransoy opened a small workshop in the centre of Ripoll, in the Girona region of Spain. From machining cast iron parts and manufacturing equipment for factories, the business developed gradually, and in 1924, Casals began production of its first industrial fan models.

Today, with a 12,000 m² factory in Sant Joan de les Abadesses, Casals produces over 100 different types and models of fans, with exports representing more than 60% of turnover. Nicotra was founded in 1957 in Italy, with a focus on centrifugal fans. Gebhardt Ventilatoren, founded in 1958 in Germany, was the pioneer of direct-driven centrifugal fans. The two companies merged in 2005, creating a European manufacturer of fans for commercial buildings and industrial ventilation applications, with production facilities in Italy, Germany, Spain, India, China, Thailand and Malaysia.
